A whole day had passed since Friday, and despite being paired up with Ronan, Melody hadn’t had a chance to kiss him again.

Probably for the best. He was so hot and cold. And someday, he’d find a real mate…leaving Melody where?

In the Rejected Republic of Heartbreak, that’s where.

Faint whistling outside, some tune that made Melody think of an old country song, reached her ears. That would be Ronan. Even though they were “buddies,” that didn’t mean they had to sleep in the same place or anything like that. First thing in the morning, he came to her trailer. From there, they would spend every waking moment together.

It was torture.

Delicious torture.

She hopped out of the trailer. Today, she was again wearing the t-shirt he’d given her. The last time she’d worn it, she noticed his gaze on her, and she’d liked that.

Sure enough, when he came into view, his steps slowed and he stared at her for a long moment.

I could be yours, she thought. If not for that stupid curse.

A half-smile played on his face as he closed the distance between them. “Did you already eat?” he asked.

“Yeah, I had a granola bar.”

With a little laugh, he held out his hand to show he’d been carrying one. “That’s what I brought you. Slim pickings while we wait for this week’s food delivery.”

He was always doing nice things for her, whether patching up her injuries or bringing her what she suspected was his last granola bar. “You should eat that,” she said. “We’re on patrol in a few minutes.”

“Are you sure you don’t want it?”

Her heart clenched. He was too nice. “I’m sure. We can patrol in our human forms for a while.”

That would be their routine. They’d do a couple of laps around the edge of the boundary on their human legs, and then a couple more in their animal forms. He was just as gorgeous in his spotted leopard fur as he was in human skin. A part of Melody was jealous of all that beauty. Here she was, a scrawny wolf who actually used to answer to the cruel nickname of “Runt.” How could she ever hope to capture the heart of a guy like Ronan?

And it was selfish to want his heart, when that heart, by necessity, would belong to someone else.

“Have you heard from Kenzie recently?” Ronan asked between bites of his breakfast.

“Yeah, we’ve exchanged some messages online. She’s doing well. No lasting effects from whatever happened.”

“I hope there’s nothing wrong with her. She’s human—she could get some kind of human disease, and—”

“We think this is magic,” Melody reminded him. “Jase’s instincts are probably right. And there are the weird eyes Kenzie saw.”

Even to her own ears, the argument sounded flimsy. What if Ronan was right to be worried about Kenzie? What if this had nothing to do with magic? Well, it wasn’t like they had anything better to do with their time. Melody’s work with Kenzie was not time-intensive. She could get it all finished after saying goodnight to Ronan at the end of the day.
